Unreasonable shift hours

  • He spoke to his boss on Monday afternoon. She called him at home and he tried to explain about the hours etc but she just asked him did he want the job or not? He was very non confrontational but she got quite aggressive and kept talking over him while he tried to explain. I think the reason is he isn't given a break is cos he's there on his own all day and would have to shut the shop which they won't allow. They have quite a high turnover of staff apparently. I wonder why.

I work 8 hour shifts on my feet the whole time and its surprisingly tiring, my feet start to ache by about hour 5. Without my 20 minute break sitting down I'd be hobbling home every day!

Don't listen to people who tell you your son is lazy, employment rights were hard won, we shouldn't roll over and be treated like cr*p just because times are hard.

    Indeed.

Times are indeed hard but that is not an excuse to treat people like !!!!!!.
  • The only part that causes concern is if the guy is being denide a break during a 6 hour+ shift.

Other than that be thankful of the extra hours earning extra money.

I fail to understand were the issue of them rostering extra shifts is. Unless he has a valid reason (heath, education commitments) to not do them.

Assuming thats not the case then it seems all he wants to do is a sunday or would rather go back to JSA.

To many bleeding hearts worrying about other peoples 'rights' is why this great country is not so great anymore.

Sorry if you feel thats harsh but I know alot of people who would love to have a job that offered extra hours whenever they could.

however I agree he is entitled to a 20 minute break for a 6 hour+ shift.

Hope that clears up the confusion!

One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:

It's not the Co-Op, is it?

My son had the same thing when he worked there and was told he had to stay on site for his break (at least he got one).

Can you tell him to go over his manager's head?

  • No, it's a Spar shop. There are only the 2 joint owners above him (husband and wife). It's the 9hr and 12hr shifts where he struggles to stay on his feet all day without a break or even being able to sit down to eat his lunch. It's beginning to aggravate an old knee problem he had as a kid. He has no problem with having to get there at 6.30am in the morning to open up the shop and sort papers etc - if only they would just give him a break in the middle of his shift!

Hi i dont know if this helps but there is a shop workers union
    Link http://www.usdaw.org.uk/

Spar is a franchise. Im sure that the head office that sells them would not wont there good name trashed by the little owners that they sell too.
While your son works fro the shop owner. Im sure taht spar the company would wont all staff that wears there name bagde to be treted as they should be under the law.
:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j

by law he is entitled to a break, and i'm sure for 12 hours isn't is an hour unpaid and 2 10 minute paid breaks. I think any of us would wither on our feet for 12 hours. I've done it before when taking peoples shifts over when working before, and its tiring, but the law is the law and part of it is an entitlement to breaks. If they don't have the staff to take him off break can't they pop in to give him a break for half an hour as it really is against the law and like someone said before, people complain when people are eating infront of them.

If it was me, I would take my break at a quiet part in the day (generally 8 in the morning or 6 at night i've always found) by sitting at the counter serving or waiting to serve customers to allow for a break as he is entitled to it.

  • i have worked in a few jobs and always got lunch break to myself which i could do with whatever i pleased. some jobs it was half hour and some jobs an hour.you would think that the husband and wife who own the spar would have the decency to come down for the half hour when your son needs a break and let him go about his own business in peace. or go to a cafe for a break.

part time worker or full time worker, you are entitled to a break.

i understand that your son probably doesnt want to stand up to them as they probably say that there are 10 other people that would take the job, but the law would see it differently.
