That their fees include boxes and packing (or at least you ask them what that would be on top of their price - its amazing how many firms don't include this in their removal price)
That they have insurance and that is included in the price (sure most of them would have), and is VAT included or do you need to add it on.
Go on recommendation.
Im sure there must be other advice out there, but I can't think at the moment!
Good luck! x0 -
I would welcome any recommendations on removal companies, please. preferably country-wide names. I tried Pickfords but no-one answere the phone and the voicemailbox is full. The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0

I'm curious as to how much removal firms charge?

We'll only be moving a distance of less than 30 miles and reckon with two estate cars we'll be able to fit our furniture etc into a small box van.
Anyone have any idea?
(Sorry if I hi-jacked this thread....:o )0 -
look on the B.A.R. website, you can search for companies in your area.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. i went with a long established removals local company .
paid about £300 distance is kinda irrelevent if it,s a within say 40 miles. your paying for the heavy lifting and hard work.
all in all the best £300 i spent in the whole move.
people we brought off had Pickfords do there packing and removals.
arrived 3 hours late thus delaying us 3 hours and left all their knives and forks in the draws. did they ever back the wrong pony. never heard a good word about Pickfords.
go on recommendation, Watchdog had a bunch of cowboys called Abbey Crown removals . posh name flash website were all border jumpers who dissapeared and left peoples stuff out in the rain. BE CAREFULBetter in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:0 -

Check the small print! Know exactly what is ensured and what isn't!
I used a fairly well known company in London to pack & move me to Hampshire earlier this year. My wife wanted to use someone as (a) it saves us doing it and (b) they are insured.
They damaged my widescreen TV and put 3 scratches on the screen. I paid £65 to have the damage estimated and submitted my claim to their insurer. Turns out the small print says that they are limited to £40 liability per item and that there is an excess of £100.
My TV was 5 years old - although in great shape. The repairer couldn't repair it so recommended a replacement. But the policy only pays out on the current value of the item  which they (insurer) valued as less than £40
So I have paid £65 for an estimate and still have a TV with 3 big scratches on it.
That aside though, the rest of the experience was just a dream.
