overpaid grant

Options
I was a student over 6 years ago now and whilst I was there I filled in all the forms correctly and they gave me a grant for dinner money. I accepted this as someone else who was in a better situation than me and had the same amount of children also recieved it. I now have them phoning my mum (who is very elderly as I was a mature student) to try and get hold of me. I have not lived at home for over 19 years and have not moved for over 4 years but at no time did they try to get hold of me. They are saying I need to pay back £2040 straight away I can't afford this as I ended up taking a quite low paid job and even though my hubby earns reasonable money with 3 children and other debts can not afford to pay it off at the moment. I was totally unaware that I was not entitled to the grant please help what is the best way forward from here.

what course (degree? college?), what total amount, what funding body?

can you get your mum to give them your contact details to find out exactly what is going on? second hand info won't be the best in this situation!

  • I was paid the grant money by my local council It was for dinner money for my three children over the course of the 3 year degree I have asked them to send me a letter detailing why it is so much because I think charges have been added that I have been totally unaware of. The course was an ICT in education course it was a degree at university.

Why not just ring them up, it would be much quicker?

If it turns out that you do owe the money you may well be able to pay it in installments but you can't expect it not to be repaid whilst you pay other debts.
