Advice needed- 6 months winter sports

I am due to leave for America ( California) for the winter season in December for 6 months. I am trying to find the cheapest insurance policy that will cover me for that length of time with winter sports cover.
The trouble I am getting however is that with every policy I have found, the 'winter sports' option only actually covers me for around 30 days out of the 6 months period. I did find one that covered me for 2 months out of the 6 but again, I need it for the whole duration.
has anyone been in a similar situation and if so how did you get round this?
