I don't smoke, drink and try and limit my chocolate intake. I do think that free range eggs are expensive, however. I am on a very tight budget at the moment and there are no farms nearby that sell eggs, or I would buy them in a flash. But as I said from an animal welfare point of view, I only buy free range!

I don't drink or smoke either....and I don't limit my chocolate intake either but at £3 for 12 eggs if that's what they are it's 25p! what can you get for 25p these days thats nutritious and delicious....boiled egg and soilders yum yum:rotfl:
  • Exactly, a quid or so a box for what you can get from them is hardly expensive.
  • Unfortunately I cannot keep chickens in my urban garden, and only see dairy farms in this area of Devon.

But in my local Sainsburys' this morning, a box of 15 Family Free Range Eggs (eggs of different sizes) costs £2.00

I would say the box I bought are are medium to large in size - certainly no tiddlers.

Agree not as good as laid by your own chicks or from the farm gate, but many people do not have that option.
  • you can also try your local trader shops who sometimes deal with farms for their eggs- i know mine do, the same as when i lived in devon. mine sells milk and eggs cheaper than sainsburys and are from local farms.

    Oh no! What a shame!
I'm sure you'll be able to rehome them, they're fairly popular at the moment, least they are in my area.
I'd take them but I a) probably live 900000 miles away (I live in a tiny village!) b) would have to ask family before I added to our flock!

Maybe post an ad in your local newsagents/paper see if there's any interest?

I am sure there are lots of people willing to take them off you - I would also think that as they have stopped laying for the winter you would only get serious people interested so more likely to go to a good home as they would know the score ? I am not saying all first time chicken keepers are doing it on a whim, I was one only four months ago!!

How big is the house/run - if they are only in a house and you let them out is it possible to build them a run and then you could keep them? Our hens don't get let out at all one day a week as we are both out all day and sometimes they only get an hour or so a day and they are always happy.

If they are young hens and the home is good condition I would say £50-£100 as a rough guess?

I would have expected ours to stop laying too but we still get one egg a day off each of them.
  • If they are older chickens you might have better luck rehoming separately from their house/run & bits to folk who already own chickens.
Then sell their bits on eBay (or similar) as a secondhand 'starter kit'. Everything to get you going, just add chickens!
