We have 5 layer hens at home, one of the best decisions we've ever made!
They lay far more than our family can get though so we sell/give them to neighbours/family etc.
They're funny gals too, fab personalities... for a chicken.:P
If you can I'd recommend getting them, they're easy to keep and pay their way!

I wonder if people in haiti have choice of free range eggs?
I don't know the answer to that as I'm not in Haiti. I'm assuming that you are also not in Haiti so it shouldn't really influence your egg buying decisions.
I will not get into a debate on methods of farming as my views cannot be changed. I've laid on the grass whilst my hens have been checking my hair, seeing if there is any food to be found. Then they've gone to sleep next to me. They feel pain and pleasure same as us and I can't bear the thought of them cooped up in pain for all their miserable life.0 -

I so agree. One of mine was a real snitch. If any of the others went over into next doors garden she would come and shout at the door until I came out.
Then when the neighbours were having an extension built, they would go over to the builders and have lunch with them! :rotfl:0 -
I decided to get chickens for the back garden when we were thinking about getting a pet for the girls so, we got our two hens Annie & Clarabel (they are Thomas the Tank Engine Fans;)).
Better than a bunny or guinea pig as we go through loads of eggs and have always been a bit dubious about free range claims - I used to get mine from a local farm until I saw a delivery van very early one morning dropping off huge boxes of eggs, I had noticed they had become quite uniform in size and were suddenly very clean:cool:. I had also had quite a few very old eggs in my more recent purchases.
We get two eggs most days and no signs of slowing for the winter yet - we don't have a huge garden but have built them a large run behind the greenhouse, nice and sheltered and they have a lovely cosy coop. Very Happy hens we have, people benefit from free eggs as we still have too many for our needs but the girls love to collect them and let the hens out into the garden for a run - they also help clean them out and feed them so learning about animals.
The only problem we have now is the lack of wild birds in the garden - the hens chase them away, we did have a male blackbird who held his own the other day for his share of the apples we had put out but they are not too brave:rotfl:0 -

I don't smoke, drink and try and limit my chocolate intake. I do think that free range eggs are expensive, however. I am on a very tight budget at the moment and there are no farms nearby that sell eggs, or I would buy them in a flash. But as I said from an animal welfare point of view, I only buy free range!thetravelfairy wrote: »I am soooo glad to see that most of us care about the chickens welfare.....I pay £1 for 6 from my local farm and wouldn't dream of buying any 'basic' ones....wish I could put some ignorant humans in a cage for a week see how they like it! Moaning about price of eggs, bet they don't moan when the are spending on something that's not really needed....beer, cigs, chocolate etc etc etc...
