Considering Fibre Optic - what's involved?

I'm considering switching to BT Business Fibreoptic so I have 1 static IP address and a decent whack when it comes to upload / download speeds (I play online games a lot!)

Anyway, what's involved with the fibreoptics. Does it require an engineer to come out and splice fibre wires into a special BT hub of a sort or is it just fibre to cabinet to your closest street section and then plain ADSL to your house?

I don't mind an engineer coming in but to be honest I have little faith in the technical skills of BT and their employees I'd rather they touch as little of my belongings as poss

Assuming this is the business equivalent of the BT Infinty product the fibre goes as far as a street cabinet and from there to your home it's copper. It's an engineer install.

I agree with Kwik on this,BT will probably replace the existing cabinets with new larger ones which terminate the Fibre & combine voice & data side.Basically, they'll be effectivly duplicating the way VM do their network.
Knowing what I do about the cable network that is the way I think they'll do it.

I think they'll just be adding cabs for the FTTC kit rather than replacing any Spike - they have to maintain the old copper for the landlines. I imagine they'll use spare pairs from the cables that go out from the existing cabs for the broadband connections rather than install new cables though.

I thought they'd be gaining some benefit from scrapping miles of the old fault prone copper but was told by somebody who I presume would know (Mr. Saffron on TBB) that they can't do that.

True,I was thinking that, site the new kit next to the old & link a spur of the new to the Krone blocks in the old cabs but this is BT we're talking about here...Who knows how they'll do it!:rotfl:

'Tis true, the FTTC retains the copper D-side cabling, so if yours is reasonably short and in good nick, you should get the higher speeds :)
