Council tax 25% reduction

I claim a 25% council tax reduction, i have received a letter stating the council have done a property credit history check which has returned that more than person has applied for credit at the said address in the past.

No one has been living with me and on checking the various sites that give online credit checks they only provide information on yourself or spouse, not the house, how do i obtain the information on the house to query it.

  • I had same letter about 6 weeks ago, they said they`ve ran a check through and can see bills in other peoples names. They said just sign it and send back letter and I havent heard anymore back.. So many people got one- its all that credit checking that the so called bounty hunters are doing as part of the govermemnts new changes. I explained why the bill was payed by my daughters dad and they were fine with it. Just send it back asap or else they will make you pay back the difference Hth.

Just noticed you asked where you would find info.. have you tried experian?

It's to do with a new thing called residency checker which is done by experian. Seems you can't obtain the information yourself though. Strange.

The authority I work for have done this several times in the past and have used experian. The address is checked by experian againt their credit database and the information the council receives comes from this. TBH it only looks at credit checks etc that have been registered against that specific address so they have something on file regarding your address showing another name.

You can ask the council regarding this but at the end of the day what they can tell you will be limited as they only get a result based on info held by experian. The council have no influence over this information.

Have you an ex-partner or children who may still have this address recorded against something ?. It could be something that has been open for a while.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
