trying to set up 2 pcs with wireless and it aint happening
the wireless somhow refuses to transfer settings via a floppy or usb pen drive, now one pc is running sp home with sp2 and the other xp pro with sp1 could this be the problem? im using a mentor usb adaptor and a mentor pci wireless card and nortons internet security 2005 on both machines i have even tried disableing both and checked xp firewall is off, the machines are both seeing each other and seem to be sending packages but i cant access internet or mail on the other pc, i have tried setting them up manually with both encyption and without in case i done that bit wrong but still no joy. Anybody any ideas where either im going wrong or missing something?

Hey,
You will need to explain things just a wee bit better, are you using a router or are you just connecting the 2 pc's adhoc?
If there isn't a router involved then you are going to have to set up internet connection sharing on the pc which is connected to the internet to allow the other computer access. The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.0 -
Thanks for the reply, i am a little further on but not quite there yet, i upgraded the other machine to have sp2 and then ran the network wizard which seemed to run ok till it hit me with a microsoft error - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;871122which i dont understand what i should do as both my usb adaptor and pci wirless adaptor both came with software so any advice will be appreciated as i now seem closer to getting somewhere or finding out why it aint working. The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

does your pc recognise the usb2 wireless dongle?
Is it configured right?
Personaly i would stick with a 54g wireless pci card rather than a usb dongle that rely's on (cough crappy) windows to run via PNP£2 savers club = £83.500 -
Every wireless adapter or card I have dealt with has it's own software included, sometimes it's good and sometimes it isn't but if you want to use windows to set things up for you then it has to be disabled. There is nearly always just a check box to disable it.
You still haven't said if you are using a router or not but I am assuming you are not.
What I suggest you do is set up your first computer that is connected to the internet.
Go to your network connections, right click > properties > advanced
Allow other computers to connect to the internet through this machine.
That has now set up that computer as a gateway.
It's now just a matter of setting the other computer up to connect with it.The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.0 -
Found a guide that might be useful for you:

Sorry i am not using a router, been told my pc will act as a router, i have done the above allowing my main pc to allow internet connection sharing but double checked and its ticked, what im looking into now is the main pc with the internet is sharing via the usb adaptor and in the guide it recomend the pci card for the pc with internet connection also i still trying to figure out what the microsoft error means - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;871122 is it telling me the softwae is incomptible and that i should be using microsofts? im asking cause the last time we set this up we used a me machine and xp sp1 and what i done then to set it up i have done now differance being no internet whereas before i got internet and also this time i get a message from microsoft message after setting up the network, it took all the settings and told me i had sucessfully set up a connection but due to this microsoft 87112 message it might not work so im thinking theres something in the message.
Sorry if it all sounds confusing, i am trying to put it across the best i canThe more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -

Im not trying to be funny but you have lost me. If the guide talks about the pci card thats just because they weren't using a usb wireless adapter they were using a pci one, as far as your concerned there is no difference, so just ignore that.
What that link is saying is that if you want to use microsoft to configure things for you then you should disable the software which was provided with your wireless adapter. If both windows and this software are both trying to configure the adapter then there are going to be conflicts which will result in error messages and no connection.
My advice to you is to start from again from the beginning.
Take out the usb adapter on your main machine, get the internet working.
Put your usb adapter back in, enable internet connection sharing for the usb wireless adapter.
Then move on to the other machine and set that up.The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.0
