Online shopping or catalogue shopping is covered by the Distance Selling Act, which gives you 7 days to return any unused goods for a full refund.
If you are buying in a shop, it makes no difference who you are buying for.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

If you buy online and return the goods as you dont like them, you will still be charged for the p&p fees btw, so will only get the money back from the goods itselfSmile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

Provided that the goods returned are covered by the DSR's, you are entitled to a full refund of the purchase price and the original P&P charges.
The seller is not legally entitled to make any deductions.
You may also be entitled to claim the cost of the return postage (or insist that the seller arranges collection of the goods) depending on how the seller has worded their returns policy.0 -

some shops DO allow return of goods for a full refund if you just decide you don't like something when you get it home.
These include M&S, Next & Primark - at the moment.
Beware of buying stuff in M&S that is marked with a 'S', usually on a special sale rail - these are non-returnable UNLESS faulty.
Your best bet is to ask what a particular shop's returns policy is before you pay, just to be on the safe side.0 -
I went shopping yesterday and noticed on a couple of the receipts when i got home that Cash refunds are not given? I did go into Super Dry where the guy at the till told me before i made the purchase that a cash refund would not be given but i would be able to exchange it, is this correct?
I believe this is illegal. It is certainly reasonable to expect that a refund would be made in the same format as the payment (i.e. a cash refund if you paid by cash).
Birmingham Trading Standards are also of the opinion that such notices would be illegal.0 -

You've misunderstood the OP and the quote.0
