Transfering Money - Why so slow?

Hi All
Just a quick query. I'm in the process of transferring money from my Barclays current account to my Egg savings account. Everything is done online so nice and easy and straight forward - so why does it take 3 days to transfer? It is taken from my Barclays account immediately I hit GO, and floats in cyberspace for 3 days... I thought this was the 21st Century with instant transactions..... Can anyone shed any light on this?
