Problem logging on with Firefox...

If anyone can help with my problem it would be greatly appreciated.
I recently stopped using AOL Browser software, after using AOL dial up for many years, I am now using AOL wireless broadband, although I still have software installed, as I gather that because I have a wireless router, rather than a broadband modem, I still need AOL dialer to sign on, although I haven't tested yet.
While on dial up, I did at times use Firefox originally it worked well, but I then started getting error messages saying server not found, assumed it had become corrupted so deleted & reinstalled but same thing happened, so removed.
When I got broadband, I downloaded Firefox again & the same thing has happened, although this time I started to take a look around & found that gooing to Tools > Options > Connections & clicking on direct connection or auto, allowed me to log on, but I have to do it every time I log onto Firefox, I did also copy my partner's settings which also worked, but as no default once logged off had to go back again. If anyone has any ideas I'd very much appreciate.
