how far in advance should deposit be paid

Thanks to all for the posts. The work never actually commenced and no contact was made to say why things never started as scheduled, I had to contact them - twice in ten days before getting a call.
Told them it's a bit late in the year now to have ch installed and that it will have to be next year, but haven't had my £500 (bit more than 10%) back yet. So they had a loan from me for over 4 months. A lesson learned.

Well, I hope it was "loan" and I do actually get it back

I was impressed with the quote and what and how they planned to do everything, and as the previous (higher) quote was also for an October start, I thought October must be the best I could expect (this was in late June). Should have tried a couple more firms I realise now.
