Copying a photo CD

Can anyone tell me if this can be done. Son had professional photographer for his wedding at a cost of £900. This included 650 photo's on the website and an album with 40 photo's of their choice. They can also purchase a CD copy of all 650 photos for £80. Anyone can order a hard copy photo from the website for prices ranging from £10 to £50 each depending on size. Now it doesn't take a genuis to work out that this could become very expensive for our relatives. It would be ideal if we bought the CD and had photos printed from that, but I've got a feeling that the CD would be copyrighted. Am I correct? And if I am, is there any way around it? I've been told that some stores will do it if we have a letter from the photographer giving permission. Or is there any other way?

right click and save the photos from the website?

depends on the CD if it is copyrighted (I doubt it will) if it is a data CD of just the photos then it would be exactly like if they were on the hard drive and you could just copy them off and reburn it. If it is a flash CD then a simple copy from any CD burning software (that likely came with your computer) can do that.

I hope for £80 you're getting the full res images (something you likely arent from the website.
  • Respect to jayme1, but : -

Most [ not all-but perhaps 99% ] photographers will already have made sure every single thing will be copy write [d] and watermarked /spoiled, and or of such a low res as to make them useless. Before you pay one single penny extra (1) get in writing from the photographer permission and an (2) agreement to provide high res unadulterated images on the disk, with permission to (3 ) reproduce them yourself. It is very very unlikely for example that 650 high res images will fit an a CD.

English Copyright Law states that the copyright of photographs remains with the photographer

Someone will have signed a MODEL RELEASE. Where the Bride and Groom grant the photographer and its legal representatives, heirs and assigns, the irrevocable and unlimited consent to use the photographs of the bride and groom for editorial, competition, advertising and any other purpose and in any manner, to alter the photographs without restriction and liability in connection with the images.

Check very very carefully before parting with a penny ! Ring and ask is the best starting place. Print shops even with permission can't make a silk purse from a sows ear, if the deliberately low quality image they are given to work with won't reproduce at a size bigger than an enprint there is little they can do even with permission.

Not everyone shares my view !, here I duck and run on an exit stage door left ;)

You're sort of mixing up two different things here. Everything will be (probably) copyrighted. This is just a legal term that means you don't have the right to copy it. That's very different to having the ability to copy it. As with jayme1, I would be quite surprised if it's copy protected. I would expect you can just put it in your PC and copy it as any other disc.

My first thought would be to speak to the photographer and ask whether you are allowed to copy some photos from the CD. The answer is probably yes. I don't think many photographers are expecting reprints of old wedding photos as a significant future income stream!

What you're getting when you spend the money on these prints is not in the same class of results as you can get printing on a home inkjet. Professional printers generally use more than the standard 3 colour inks (sometimes 10 or 12) so they can get much better colour reproduction, and also they'll have been properly calibrated; so as long as the photographers camera is also calibrated, the prints will be rendered perfectly. If you try getting a home inkjet photo and comparing the printed colour with the real object, you'll notice a lot of colours are just plain wrong.

I had some wedding photos where I bought a proper copy, and printed copies for some people and even with my £200 inkjet (which itself is noticebly better than my old £60 Epson), my prints just looked rubbish at the side of the professional ones.

A 'single' cd copy of 650 pics? Sound quite small file sizes for such an expensive payment that!
Anyways, I know what I would do in that situation. £900 quids not bad going for a days work.

They can also purchase a CD copy of all 650 photos for £80

it will be a slide show of low res images and next to useless for prints

Thanks folks. I've clarified a few things since yesterday. The £900 package apparently includes a high res disc of the 650 photo's but not specified if it is copyrighted. The £80 disc is a slideshow purely for TV/PC viewing, so I'm guessing this is low res. We cant right click & copy from the website as a), there is indeed a watermark on the enlarged photo and also right clicking does actually produce a copyright box. Son is going today to get the disc and then we'll see if it can be copied. We'll try first to get the photographers permission, if not, I'm sure we can find a solution to that.!!!!!

I don't want to encourage you to breach the copyright, but "disabling" the right click on their web page is a rather "poor man's" copy protection ;)

Disable Javascript in your browser and you will be able to do it.

The cd may be a dvd, or a few cd's. Talk to photographer and ask what the £80 is for, and whether you will be able to reprint from it. Also ask what resolution- hi-res can vary!
  • "" Son is going today to get the disc and then we'll see if it can be copied ""

    - do you mean the disk already paid for as part of the original £900 contract, or ;
    - do you mean the one you have to pay an extra £80 for ?

I would waste the petrol money collecting the £80 disk if it was already paid for, but I certainly would not see any value in paying an extra £80 for it.

N.B. Pay attention to Lirin's helpful comments.
