G1 Ipod Touch is Deaded.

My Dad bought a G1 Ipod Touch however long ago they came out. Sometime last year a software update came out which killed it - basically the thing constantly needed reformating and Dad couldn't get it to work.

Apple said "we'll scrap it and if you pay £75 you can have a new one" but we took into into a stall in the local market and eventually they were able to fix it, cost £50 in the end. As everybody else in the family has iPhones now Dad gave the Touch to me.

So what do I do, plug it into my pc and the damn thing syncs immediately with the latest software update and I can't stop it and now it won't work. I have got it into DFU (is it DFU?) mode and basically reset it but I can't get iTunes to restore it.

It keeps coming up with error message 14 which is something to do with USB ports - the ports work fine. I have an older version of the software but iTunes won't put that on it.

iTunes will recognise that the ipod is connected and says that it needs restoring but it just won't complete the restore process.

Can I do it manually? I did manage to get into my nano (broke the screen on that years ago) on the hard drive and copy all the music off it but I can't find the Touch as a disk to do that.

it always gives you a pop up to update the newer OS so you had to click 'yes update'
but I had the original ipod touch updated to the latest 3.1.3 and it had no problems so I dont know what is wrong with the update for it not to work on yours.

it is possible to downgrade the OS on some iphones and ipods but it is pretty difficult.

also have a search/ask on macrumors most problems have been coverd on there at one point.

There seems to be a lot all over the internet about it and most of them just say restore and it'll be fine. Unfortunately, it won't restore and I keep getting error messages. I'm struggling to find anything about getting rid of those error messages.

I'm trying to update iTunes to see if that helps but I'm constantly told that there's an invalid signature. I tried to download through the Apple website but it won't run the set up - no error message though. Now I'm trying it through IE instead of Google Chrome. I can get as far as running the installation through IE but it won't complete because of errors, and it won't tell me what those are.

I've tried to restore the iPod Touch to the latest software and some older software and it won't complete on either so I'm a bit stuck, but I seem to get a different reason every time?!
