Hi, it's right, but no insurance company would believe you weren't fronting.
Try collingwoodannual in his name, for provisional only though, and it'll get a lot dearer when he passes.
If you do find insurance that'll cover him as provisional, and then as a full licence, check the cost doesn't go through the roof, as normally you have to shop around for both.
Put yourself on as a second driver.

I agree the insurance company will assume you are fronting. Strange you suddenly want a 2nd car when your son
    is learning to drive.

They may take your money but refuse to payout in the event of an accident. I read one case a while back father was
a manager driver a large executive company car & insures a small older hatchback. Then adds his daughter as a named
driver. She crashed it. When the inspectors viewed it it was obviously not his main vehicle, Pick accessories & fluffy toys
    everywhere.

Also dont forget if he crashes you will lose your no claims, I dont think it is protected when youger drivers have an accident.

  • thanks for the replys i should have said my mam is getting a new car and asked if we would want her old one.when it last had its MOT we were advised not to bother next time it needs doing in july so i dont think my son would have past by then.as i say it will not be fronting my car is a bit heavy on the petrol so i would use the micra more than my picaso but i need my 1st car because my wife has mobility problens.
    thanks again

I get the deal with 'fronting', but how would the insurance actually prove it? If they dislike it so much, why don't they simply ban any named driver under 25?

In this case it would be quite simple. Making some sweeping assumptions, but . . .

2 people in the house can drive, OP and his son.
    There are 2 cars
The reason given for having 2 cars is as a cost saving excercise because the picasso is a bit thirsty. OP is therefore main driver on both vehicles.

By my very rough calculations the OP would have to do 25,000 miles per annum in the Micra to offset the cost of running it. So to make any savings you'd need to do 30,000 miles, add to that the other miles that would be done in the Picasso, that's an awful lot of miles. I suspect proving the OP was not doing 35,000 miles a year would be quite simple.

OP - I'm not having a go at you, just illustrating how fronting can be proved by an insurance co.

Because there are under 25s who are legitimately "second drivers"?

In terms of proving fronting, you'd be surprised how daft people can be. I've heard plenty of examples from one insurance firm (a client of mine) of vehicles which are registered to a 50-year-old in Scotland but are frequently being crashed / broken into around University campuses in Southampton.

They don't prove it. They just don't pay, then you have to try to get the money.

Because they can take all the premiums... and then not pay out. Win-Win for them!
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • i might get a quote with me as 2nd driver and see what the price is..thanks for the replys and not biting my head off lol.
