Work placement year. Help please?

Options
Hi all,

I'm currently in my 2nd year of studying Public Services and have a work placement year for my 3rd year. I have been looking at working abroad with teaching or management being my main aim; but open to any suggestions. The Uni can organise one to Saudi Arabia but I'm unsure due to their very strict laws and lifestyle.

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice/information on working abroad in a work placement year? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks. :money:

I'm already in talks with the Uni but they've asked me to also look myself as they can only offer limited services due to time restrictions with them looking after so many placement students.

If you want to go abroad you'll need to be able to speak the language to a competent level. Unless you go to an English-speaking country. I'm sure you'd also need to look into visa conditions and such like.

My housemates worked in Germany for their placement. They didn't know any German when they went, but most people over there have a good grasp of the English language.

I wouldn't say this is the norm though!

Sorry I should have put more detail into my initial post. No I do not speak any other language but for example, the Saudi Arabia teaching placement there were no regulations on you speaking Arabic.

There may not be a stipulation of you being able to speak the language, but what about communicating with colleagues, or just general day-to-day living? How are you going to be able to organise anything (somewhere to live, say) if you can't speak the language? Of course over time you would probably learn what you needed to, but the first short while you will be stuck.

Employers seem to love American work placements but they're very competitive and it's an expensive country. For something with the 'wow' factor, how about Japan?

Japan is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. It's also not easy to learn Japanese.
