The supplier doesn't set the times; it's set by the local distribution company.

Wait up until your storage heaters switch on, add 7 and that will be when it goes off.
    |If you haven't got storage heaters you probably should not be on and economy 7 tariff.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Unfortunately sometimes it's not 7 continuous hours ;)

We don't have storage heaters, but it would cost us more money to be billed on the equivilent single rate tariff compared to the E7 tariff we are on ;)

No, it doesn't work like that.

I have e7 with BG. As said before, the supplier has no idea, and has no control over, of the timing of the cheap 7 hours (except that they are sometime between 00:00 and 08:30 for example).

Recently, my cheap rate has started at 00:00 till 00:15, then 00:30, going off at 07:30, but I don't know what happens in between (presumably, there are 15 minutes in that range when it goes to full rate (in order that I only get 7 hours cheap rate).

There are probably a couple of reasons for this disjoint switching. Firstly, it may be frequency control of the grid (the frequency must average 50Hz over 24hrs) and a big load like thousands of storage heaters could be used in order to acheive that.

Secondly, they are likely to get many users who put their washing machine and drier on at night (like us) caught in the 15mins of peak rate, since we have no idea of the timing when the peak rate is switched in, which may of course vary daily.
