Hello, hoping someone can help!
My mum has MS and has just been given a Fiat Multipla from a very generous friend. She has a number of carers working for her as PA's and before now she has had to get adapted taxi's everywhere at an exceptional cost. We now have the issue of trying to insure the car, mum does not drive so do you know of any insurance companies that will accept non driving licensed applicants, i have rung a few and googled this but am not getting anywhere, a few have told me she will have to transfer ownership of the car and that person will have to take out the insurance but i am unsure if this will have a knock on effect as we all have our own cars with our own policies, any advice gratefully received
Thanks in advance!

You can insure a car for someone who's not the named keeper, so you don't have to transfer ownership.0

The registed keeper and the licenced driver are two diffrent things, I got insurance to drive my brothers car as a learner and we lived in diffrent areas of the country but the problem that your mother has is that she will be allowing diffrent people to drive her in her car which she has insured just for the purpose of making it legal for several other people driving it on there own insurance and I cant see an insurance company insuring her on that basis.0 -
she would be better off getting a comercial type of car insurance, like a driving instructor would have, then people would be insured to drive without being named on the policy.0

Thank you all, i will look into commercial insurance as well as ringing Fish tomorrow to see if they can offer any advice as they specialise in disablity, much appreciated!0

Is there one person who is likely to use the car more than anyone else? If so it might be worth enquiring about having that person as the main driver on an 'any driver' policy. It won't be cheap but it could be a way round it.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

~Hi LazyDaisy...No not really, she has 5 PA's who all have their own car and this car will solely be used to take Mum to and from Yoga twice a week and the odd trip to doctors or supermarket, I can't see us doing more than 1000 miles per year in it. I wanted to go via the named driver route as we all have a decent number of years no claims on our other cars and no penalties so thought this may bring the price down for mum (as we all seem to be competent drivers) Thankyou all for your advice though, i will just have to see what Fish say tomorrow as she already has PA/Carer liability insurance with them0

My father has stopped driving but still owns his car which is useful when other family members come to stay. His car insurance specifically says that he is not insured but that the car can be driven by anyone over 50 with his permission. As the carers are likely to be younger than that maybe she could get one for any driver with her permission.0

Have you talked to Motability. While you don't have one of their cars, they may be able to assist witht heir insurance agent or offer advice about who else might be able to help?

How about looking at the Mobilise website? Can't post link from iPod but it's the first result on Google. They're a specialist charity for disabled motorists and they have various info leaflets as well as an online forum with access to their expert advisers.C'est le ton qui fait la chanson0
