New Car Battery - Cheapest?

Hello :)

I bought my first ever car this year, a Citreon C3 1.4 Diesel (53plate)....its been fantastic all year but the past three days its needed jumpstarting 3 times. Ive been told its probably the battery else a jumpstart wouldnt work although when the battery has been tested it comes out at about 12.4V which is apparently fully charged.

To save messing around at a garage is it better (and possibly cheaper) to buy a new battery?

I havent got a clue where to buy a battery or if there are price comparisions?

The Battery Guys are charging £57:

Halfords are charging £107.99
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_734763_langId_-1_categoryId_165762

Is there any difference? Is it wise to buy batterys online? Anyone recommend a online (or offine) store.

Thanks.
J Bowes

Also if it would work out cheaper I would consider a JumpStart machine, anyone recommend this option?

Sounds like your battery is giving notice of impending failure. Batteries have to work harder through the winter so I would say replace it. Forget jump starting it regularly. Too much hassle and what are you going to do if you're away from home and it won't start?
Worth asking a local garage or repair shop what they'd charge for one. The Battery Guys price doesn't sound bad. It has a 4 year warranty, so there must be some confidence in the battery. Halfords will of course charge a bit more and it seems a lot more for a branded name battery, even with a 5 year warranty.

Sounds like either charging system or battery, charging system should be putting 13.5V or more onto the battery when the engine is running at 2000 rpm, if it is then odds on it’s the battery (assuming you are running it enough to re-charge it after starting).

Another possibility is that something is running it down over night, boot light or similar

Your local motor factor (yellow pages) is probably the easiest and cheapest place to get a replacement. If you plan on keeping the car then get the biggest battery that will physically fit into the tray.
  • I bought a battery a few days ago from www.advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk it was half the price of getting it from halfords, free next day delivery by courier to so well impressed

Try Lucas http://www.lucas-batteries-online.co.uk/ they actually make the batteries rather than supply so should in theory be competitive

If it is your battery, try your local motor factors, I have found them to be competetive and they fit and dispose of your old battery for you.

Mine was actually cheaper than buying online for a Bosch Battery.

Also should you require a warranty claim, they are far easier to deal with than online merchants.
  • Does motor factors have website?

Ive found one for £55 at www.advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/carbattery027.html

Thanks for all your help guys, if i cant find a local motor factor i'll probably be ordering the above battery!

Vauxhall batteries are cheap from the dealer at the moment.
I've just bought a diesel 65A, 640 CCA battery retails at £75, three year guarentee.
    50A 420CCA retails at £50.

On the link that you posted above at post #7, there is a link to the Varta equivalent battery.

Cheap batteries are usually cheap for a reason, Varta is a respected brand of manufacturer.
