Replace the connectors as the old one was secured - power and IDE cables.

You will then need to reinstall windows, by entering the BIOS and changing the boot sequence to CD Rom.

Most laptop drives are held in carriers of some sort which match the standard connectors to those use by the laptop manufacturer. Just find the retaining screw(s), pull out the caddy and swap the drives over. Then insert and re-install Windows from the recovery disk supplied with the laptop (it contains all the drivers you'll need for the laptop h/w).

Cough, listen to the guy above, I'm forgetting it's a laptop.
  • Dont worry its very easy to replace a laptop hard drive. Or you could buy Spinrite 6 before getting a new hard drive. For more details on Spinrite 6 go to http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm. For $89 which is £47.65 its good because you can use it in all you machines. I have heard good comments about this software. The person that created this program is called Steve Gibson, that appears in Security Now, which is a podcast that informs everyone about security issues. Go to twit.tv for more information. If you are going via iTunes search for "TWIT" and it will bring up all the podcasts/netcast by the people. twit stands this week in tech

  • i know a lot about steve gibson :) great guy.

Anyway thanks for all the comments so far. The hard drive is already bought so above option pointless ;)

So is it likely the hard drive is somewhere under the bottom of the laptop behind some screws.. or like in the side.. (i.e where the ram goes or where the pcmcia card goes [area wise])

  • I found a Maintenance and Service Guide go to http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00226047.pdf to download it. Page 89 is the one you want.
Remove the hard drive by following these steps:a.Remove the 2 rubber screw covers 1 that conceal the hard drive retention screws.✎Spare part number 371808-001 should be used to replace the hard drive rubber screw covers.b.Remove the 2 PM2.0×6.0 screws 2 that secure the hard drive to the notebook.c.Use the notch in the hard drive bezel to slide the hard drive forward 3.d.Remove the hard drive.

e.Remove the 2 PM1.5×5.0 shoulder screws 1 that secure the hard drive bezel to the hard drive.f.Remove the hard drive bezel 2.

g.Remove the 4 PM2.5×4.0 screws 1 that secure the hard drive frame to the hard drive.h.Remove the hard drive frame 2.i.Remove the hard drive connector 3.

Reverse the above procedure to reassemble and install the hard drive.

Sorry for no images but it is all in the pdf. :)
