needing new windows what are best/longest lived

My daughter has bought a house that has wooden framed double glazing windows and they are needing replaced.

Since she intends to stay in this house for the rest of her life, she says 60 years to go, what would be the best window material for long life?

UPVC or aluminium or something different?

She hasn't started looking for quotes yet but she wants them replaced within the next 6 months.

UPVC will not last 60 years, 30 could be pushing it.

Well maintained wood will last forever.

Alu clad wood would remove the need for the maintenance.

Please excuse my ignorance but what are aluminimum clad wooden windows?

Is the Aluminium only on the outside and the wood on the inside, i.e. the sills? If so, does the outside look like normal Aluminium or UPVC?

    Thanks
  • Oak will last for 100yrs or so (as long as no sapwood is used) but the glass units will need replacing every 15yrs or so......But it is expensive and will need some maintenance.

Absolutely correct. Assuming of course the locks don't break, the hinges don't break, the sealant around the frame lasts forever, the seals around the glazing units last forever, the plastic doesn't yellow or become unsightly over time, the....
