these both were £61.50 a month a few months ago , they decided i was paying too much , now with the 7% looming im wondering whether to change my british gas tarrif for a websaver 10 or a fixed oct 2010 what do you think , im in credit with gas and electric buy just over £100 each what do you think

Get your annual kWh for gas and electricity and put them into a comparison site and choose the tariff that works for you.

You would expect to be in credit at this time of year - your next two bills will be your biggest.

If you're concerned about prices, why are you still on the standard tariff? That's the most expensive one available!
The saving you will make by switching to the cheapest online tariff will vastly outweigh the 7% price increase.
Someone will know the exact differential no doubt.
Edit: in my region, Websaver 10 would be 16% cheaper according to energyhelpline.

just double checked and the credit has all changed now ive given a meter reading im £31 in credit with my gas and £30 in debt with my leccy , there sneekey arnt they.
the fixed till oct 2012 is £99 a month are there any better fixed deals out there , do they still take meter reading when your fixed and does the debt ammount still build up , so if im paying £99 a month fixed and im using my leccy and gas willy nilly would they charge me for this and in oct 2012 id get a back log bill for loads£££££???

If I understand your reply correctly, you appear to have the wrong idea about fixed tariffs. 'Fixed' means that the unit price is fixed until the end of the contract period, it doesn't mean you only pay £99 per month regardless of your usage! If your usage is such that £99 is too low, then they will increase your DD after they have next read the meter, or you have supplied a reading.
You said that you were on a standard tariff, not a fixed tariff?

No one can predict if you'll be better off fixing or going on a variable tariff-if we knew that we''d all be jumping the same way now. Fixing is just like buying insurance-you know the cost will not go higher, but you pay a premium for that assurance.
One thing I can tell you that is worth doing is to get off the standard tariff, as that is the most expensive option of all.

  • get off standard asap mate - websaver is always cheapest or you can get a fixed price but its not that cheap yet but then we dont know how much the gas is gonna go up. just read on the bbc that in 2008 rates went up 35% - so 7% means there might be more to go

but get off standrad for sure
