Selling a car using classified ad on Ebay

Hi
Has anyone tried selling a car using a classified ad on ebay ?

At £6 it's certainly cheap compared to say, an ad in Autotrader, but I wondered if anybody had an success with selling this way.

To me it seems much better than the uncertainty of an auction.

Also sometimes in ads the registration number has been deliberately obscured. I wondered why that was, and whether it was really necessary ?

Cheers
Julian

yeah i sold a mini cooper s works on ebay, tried autotrader and had limited access in fact i got more calls from other magazines offering me deals. listed it on ebay, and on the relist i got a guy who lived very close to me buy my car.

think its worth 6.00 for a try you never know.

would be the first place now when buying car or even selling it.
Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!

No, noone bids if you put it in as a classified ad, you just enter your contact details and people ring or email you.

    £6 is all you pay.

Usual caveats apply - plenty of pictures, be honest, highlight the good points, make sure it has at least 6 months mot, and make sure you aren;'t looking too much for it.

I sold my brothers car for him in august it went for £9,100.00 it was a mitsubishi lancer evolution though, and it got 2986 views on it and about 100 watching it, lots of questions and i couldnt believe all the people bidding didnt even come and look first. not at all bad on costs or final value fee either, my brother was well happy

  • How much is the final fee, if it s a % it could cost hundreds. I sold something for £300 and the ebay fees were about £12 so if doing that then it would be massive for my car (approx £6k)
  • Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I am selling a classic car on ebay at the moment, auction not classified.
I'm hoping for up to £1900 but am a bit concerned about payment through Paypal or cheque. We hear of so many occasions where a dodgy cheque has been used or phoney credit card through Paypal. I have stated that the car will not be released until payment has cleared but days or weeks after the clearance cheques have bounced or the credit card payment has failed. I know cash is the ideal, and stated this in the listing, but how can a payment be confirmed as valid - quickly, either cheque or Paypal? Limiting to cash only may make potential buyers suspicious and possibly limit bidders. Any advice appreciated.

To be honest as a buyer I would really only expect to pay cash/bank transfer or possibly bank draft. I would not offer any other means apart from a small deposit via PayPal.

If you offer any other methods I might politely suggest you are advertising for potential scammers.
  • Thanks Hintza - for your polite suggestion, much appreciated. I've only offered Paypal and Bankers draft and also, as I mentioned, that cash would be the ideal. I will, however change it to request a small deposit through Paypal, not full payment (reduces their extortionate fees too) and also add the direct bank transfer as an option.
Even the Bank cheque or draft concerns me as we've heard on this forum about stolen cheques and forgeries!
  • So anyone know the total fees that ebay charge for selling cars?
