Hi
I've just put in a claim for a laptop, I spilt coffee on it(stupid I know).

Things I wanna know

It's a MacBook so if not fixable will they replace with an apple?, I don't have a clue with windows and really wouldn't want a Windows machine tbh.

The equivalent machine no longer has a firewire port but I have a £300 audio interface which is FireWire only, would they allow me to pay a bit more and upgrade to the MacBook pro?, from what I gather FireWire is not something that can be added to a machine.

The other thing is the ram has been upgraded from 1gb to 4gb so would this be taken into consideration.

I'm hoping it will be simple, the machines under 2 years old and worth £500 2nd hand, I have all the packaging and have shown them the receipt. No way I'd of thought of doing an insurance scam with a machine worth over £500 2nd hand(I wouldn't do anyway)

Just phone your Insurers and they will explain the process. The laptop will probably be sent for inspection to check likely cause of the damage and if repairable. If it cannot be fixed and the Insurers are happy with the circumstances of loss, they will arrange a replacement. At this point you can discuss the replacement and pay for an upgrade if you wish.

When you first submit the claim, I wouldn't start talking about replacement if I were you. Just report the damage.

If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Hi thanks for that, yes it's being collected tomorrow.

Slightly worried though as the company that it's going to don't seem that professional, they have a website but it is riddled with errors and basic spelling mistakes.
It was maintenance direct that contacted me first after putting in the claim with cornhill. I presume they then contracted it out to another company.

I wouldn't worry too much. Insurers use various companies to inspect Laptops and you will have the opportunity of having the laptop returned to you, so you can arrange your own inspection if you are unhappy.

When the Insurers contract work out, they still hold the responsibility for its safekeeping and any work that is carried out. Also in terms of data security, again the Insurers should have taken appropriate measures to ensure that companies they use, operate to the standards expected.

insurers go with who gives them the best deal, they dont care
  • Few more issues, the address on the shipping labels is a home address where the letter received was on an industrial estate in the same city.
Gonna make sure I've got receipts and photos all the way. Just hope the fact they seem small means they're more efficient as some of the larger companies do seem to be hard work.
