Thanks Jayme - it looks like an ipod touch and a speaker dock would tick most boxes.
I see that the speaker dock from Argos had plenty of good reviews, especially for travelling, but doesn't have a remote control which is a bit of a drawback.
For style over substance by all means waste your money on an iPod! If it's music you want then buy a Cowon or iRiver.
    Any reasons why?

wow didnt notice that, this one has a remote http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5242203.htm as do load of other docks just look round for one that fits your fancy.

also you sometimes get them at half price or free when you buy an ipod, just look around for an offer.

While I agree that all the best docking stations are geared up for Ipods, I am in the 'anything but Ipod' camp.

I have had several Sandisk Sansa's - the latest is an 8gb Fuse. You can rip CDs to Wimdows Media Player and and then sycnchronise it.

It'll take audio books, podcasts and videos and in my opinion comes with some of the best in-ear phones going - sound terrific.

Search on-line for the best price, about £50 depending upon memory (they take a micro SD card)
The force is strong in this one!
  • If yo want quality music defiantly go cowan sound is twice ipod.

Thanks again Jayme - as I don't need one until next summer I'll have a look round after Christmas to see if there's any bargains.

As that's one of the major factors, then it looks like ipods win.

If it's not got a speaker dock then it's not coming in!

As alternatives to iPods, Sansa, Sony, Cowon, Samsung all make great players.

Not so great are Creative, Philips etc.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
