Hi,
I am REALLY hoping that someone can help.
My partner and I were claiming benefits for 3 months while we were getting on our feet after moving to a new area.
We were claiming housing benefit of #110 per week for the full three months and also #36 per week council tax benefit.
We recieved a letter several months ago which stated that they were investigating the landlord had not declared the property was being used as rental property and was registered as a business.
Basically there was 11 bedsits that were attached to an office which he used as a marketing office. We never knew that anything untoward was going on especially as all the other people in the bedsit were students or people waiting on immigration.
We sent in an appeal saying this had nothing to do with us and surely they should be persuing the landlord for the housing benefit as he obtained it illegally in their eyes? He signed the form for us and they starting paying the benefit quickly.
They are saying that we owe them #1570, and have sent a form asking how much we can pay back and basically stating that this is the end and no further appeal will be heard! Is there anything we can do?

Yes we had a week by week tenancy agreement. However, this was in 2006 and we don't have anything now.
It's my understanding that the landlord has no returned to Pakistan.0
