Looking for ideas for shelving area

Hello
we are doing some decorating work on a flat we will be moving into soon and I wondered if anyone has any suggestions on how to do out a small area (0.75 m x 0.75 m) where an old back boiler was taken out of from behind the gas fire.
Hubby wants to wall-mount the tv above where this square (about 0.50 metre deep) is, and use it to place the dvd player and sky dish. He wants to feed electric into this space before we paper the wall so no cables would be seen.
I have went for a slightly "retro" paper for that wall, but havent a clue what to do with the space..i.e line it with something? what? and how to fit a couple of glass shelves into it..
If anybody how is creative and diy minded could suggest what would look good I would appreciate it very much

I would go for something very simple - lining paper if the wall surface isn't that great or even line it with hardboard to give a decent surface if you can't run to get it skimmed, then paint the inside either the base colour for the rest of the room (if that wall is a feature wall with others in plain colours) or go for a plain white inside. I'd then run battens round the 3 sides to slide the glass shelves on. If you move away from the glass you could put shelves on runners but that's going to cost more.Adventure before Dementia!0

thanks Westondave, I never thought of painting it the base colour for the rest of the room (magnolia) which would match very well with the cream/mushroom paper which will be on that wall.
Had thought of papering it with the same paper on that wall but OH think won't look right.
Do you know where I would get runners & shelves? Or if I went for glass shelves would I need to get them cut to size by a glazier and what would I use for the brackets? :beer:Owned by a Great Dane :heartsmil
