PS3 steering wheels - do they work well?

DS2 has asked for a steering wheel for the PS3 for Christmas.
Do they work well? Frustration is often rife when the kids are on the PS3 and I certainly don't want to add to that.
Does anybody have a wheel and if so does it add to the enjoyment of the game - thinking F1 and Gran turismo.
Thanks

I'm not 100% sure whether it matters to kids as much, I never had one as a kid myself. If you're used to driving real cars, it's great and really helps the realism level. It's wonderful with GT5, just got F1 today, but not played it yet.
I've got the Logitech G25 racing wheel (now replaced by almost identical G27). It's a bit pricey since it is a proper heavyweight thing made of metal rather than a typical plastic toy. It turns about 3 full rotations lock-to-lock, has paddle shifters etc. The cheaper plastic ones aren't as good, but they're still way better than a standard controller.
If the PS3 is in the living room, it's worth thinking about what you're going to attach it to for use. I've got a foldable camping table which I weight down with a couple of 15kg discs, but really it needs to be fixed onto a desk or similar.0 -
I used to have a stearing wheel for the PS and I hated it, I just found it too imprecise nothing like real driving which I was looking forward to before I bought it, but some people really do like it.
but a lot of PS3 driving games can use the SIXAXIS in the PS controler as a stearing wheel so depending on what games he has get him to check the settings to see if he can do that, it does work exactly like a stearing wheel (it just doesnt have the pedals, which I also didnt like)0 -
Sixaxis as a steering wheel is really rubbish. I agree you need a wheel with pedals and ideally gears also.
The G25 wheel has paddle shifters on the wheel and a manual / semi-automatic gear lever. In GT5, you can only choose options that the car has in real life. E.g. you can't pick a Citroen C4 and use the paddle shifters, which is a nice touch.0 -
Thanks for your comments. I wonder if the experience is different depending on whether on not your drive in real life. Obviously at 14 his experiences are limited to having driven a go-cart.
asc - yes I had already thought where the h£ll is it going to be stored and used and that is another sticking point. I'm still not thinking this is a great idea especially since I've been the price of the logitech ones. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
I got my son a steering wheel and pedals for his Xbox 360, he used it once and it's been stuck in box ever since.2011 Sealed Pot Challenge #1238 hoping for £250 ~ saved £743.32
