Visa Debit card???

It is a good move to only use a Credit card for purchases and only use your debit card for getting cash from an ATM.
The reason being: if your credit card is "cloned" or misused, the loss lies with the card issuer. If your debit card is cloned the loss is with you - you may get the money back eventually but you will have all the trouble and disruption in the meantime.
If you are travelling, the Nationwide Credit & Debit cards are the only ones that do not "load" foreign transactions. On a family holiday the savings can be substantial.
I would say this point is equally valid for this country too.0 -

The account my son has at Lloyds TSB (he's 16) has a Visa Debit card, but as I have found out from this forum its a control card (a 2 in 1 card) It can buy goods following a balance check, and use a cash machine but there is no credit facilities on the card, it can't guarentee a cheque or act like a visa card. A 3 in 1 card can also do the credit stuff including when buying goods skipping the balance check.
Actualy you can go overdrawn.
Shops dont always run the check and do it in batches at night. Also carbon copy visa transaction can still happen (thats why the numbers are raised)0 -

I assumed that as well, and that it was the same as any other visa debit / switch type cards, but I was told via this forum that these control cards do force the checks to be performed.
Does anyone still use the carbon copy transaction slips :shocked:0 -
You can go overdrawn on Electron anyway, so these "control" cards will be no different if not worse.0

You don't pay an extra fee on the exchange rate when paying with Nationwide visa debit card. I don't know if others charge a fee.0

I think the Chip in the cards tells the terminal to seek authorisation.
i guess the bank just takes a risk with the carbon copies, I think few retailers still use them as they cant take switch/maestro with those machines. And they still have to manually call up for authorisation over their 'floor limit'.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
