Off Sick whilst working 4 week notice period?

Hi I am currently working a four week redundancy notice leave date of 10th December. I have had a really bad year this year what with losing my dad 2 months ago I am now facing redundancy. I have worked for my company for just over 4 years and my company offer an ex gratia payment equivilant to my statatury payment. What with everything that has happened recently it is really getting to me. I am stressed and depressed and I am thinking of paying the doctors a visit to be signed off work during my notice. My questions are, my company pay sick pay so would they still continue to pay this as I`m on redundancy notice? And if I was to go sick during my notice would this affect my payout from my company e.g. could they reduce my final redundancy payment for whatever reason because I have taken sick leave during my notice period?

Any Advice would be much appreciated

    Company sick pay could be stopped, although unlikely in my opinion.

    Are you going to rely on this company for a reference for your next job? References must be factual, but it would be factual to report your sick days.

    You may be better talking to your GP about coping techniques & how you can manage your feelings going forward as assuming you are going to look for another job you need to be in a good state of mind.

    Supprised you have not allready been of sick with loosing your dad it is a very stressfull time allthough being in work can be a good mechanism to help cope.

    You know you company and bosses best if they are normaly simpathetic and know about your loss then I would talk to them about it, they may be simpathetic and allow some garden leave or some more flexable arangements if it fits in with the workload or even PILON and let you go early.

    Is there anything critical that you need to do before the 10 Dec like handovers.

    Still think about seeing the doctor

    Agreed, plus they may also state Employee was sick for the period of their notice period which would speak volumes to a potential employer.

    It depends on the exact terms of the company sick pay scheme. Many (but not all) are "discretionary" which means that the company can, within certain limits, decide not to pay more than SSP if it chooses.

    However others are not and are a contractual right subject to certain conditions such as submitting doctors's notes, length of employment and maximum periods off sick. Check your contract and staff handbook as, in this case, the firm would be obliged to pay.

    Also, firms are now restricted about asking about sickness record at interview so it may not be as much of a problem as some posters suggest.

    The OP does want to be careful though and it all depends on how his relation with the company is, if it is on the edge and the OP goes of sick the employer may see this as malicious and as such just refuse to give a referance and that could be 4 years missing from the employment record.

    The trouble is they could do that anyway. If they are "on the edge" as you put it then they may not be there to give a reference in any case. Equally if they are likely to give a less than ideal reference or decline to give one at all then going in for the last four weeks, against doctor's advice, cannot be guaranteed to tip the balance.

    Another option is to offer to go now in exchange for an agreed reference.

    I can understand your feelings, I lost my father, mother in law and was made redundant this year..All in all it has been a hell of a year so I do feel for you.

    To be honest though no one knows your work place better then you. I could maybe have signed off sick for my last couple of weeks but didn't as it helped being busy etc but that does not mean every place is the same.

    However if you really can not cope then you must take care of you first and worry about the rest later. It might not effect your job future ( I have still not found another job and my CV and reference is fine) but it is better to be fit and well for a new job then start something and be sick straight away.

  • If redundancy payment is termed as just that, you would receive the total amount. If, however, part of the redundancy payment was a bonus for attending work during notice, then you could lose it -please also not that any payment couched in such terms would be taxable.
