Scanner with a mind of its own

Just bought a new scanner (Kodak), and when scanning postcards, it scans them differently. They are similar black and white cards, and I put them in the top right corner of the glass. Sometimes they scan fine and are the full screen, then other times, they appear at the top right.
I have tried putting them in the middle of the scanner, have put a mark on the far side of the glass, but nothing works. The scanner setting is on 'photo'. I have tried 'document' but that doesn't work either.
I'm sure this is something really simple, but it is driving me mad. Any suggestions please

Sorry to bump, but the scanner has now started to scan a few cards, and then say it's scanning, but not doing anything, then coming up with the message "Scan to computer failed"
