HP4500 Printer Cartirdge issues

I have a HP 4500 printer and have been previously using compatible cartridges- (I really can't afford the original cartridges as I print so much!!) However the printer won't accept one of them, I've tried to switch on and off but it keeps giving me warnings that I am using compatible cartridges! the strange things is both cartridges are compatible, although it only picks up on one of them.
Is there any way of turning this off- as it won;t allow me to print.
