Gas Central Heating being installed, but dont have any gas

Options
Hi all

Really looking for some help and advice.

I went to my housing office and asked if I could get central heating installed. They have agreed to this and someone was out today advising me where a boiler would go and where the radiators would go and what I would be expected to move etc. He said I have gas pipes, so would need to have someone come out to check if gas pipes are live or dead and that I do have a meter controlled valve fitted.

He gave me an information sheet with a phone number for British Gas, I phoned them and they gave me a different number for Scotia Gas Networks. I phoned them and they are going to arrange for someone to come out check whether pipes are live or dead. They will then give me a reference number and I should contact British Gas who will install a meter.

What I was wanting to know is, does it have to be British Gas that supplies the meter and if they supply the meter, is it them that I will have to get my gas from. Sorry if these questions seem a bit daft. I am just totally clueless about this kind of thing.

My current electricity provider is Scottish Power, monthly direct debit.

Thanks

  • it depends if the supply is live or dead. if its live, a supplier will be able to check the gas database xoserve to see who the current supplier is and the current supplier would fit a meter for you.

if the supply is dead, you will get to choose your prefered supplier to fit the meter for you.

no point checking the data base as there will be no registered gas supplier on there as no meter and no gas being used, if pipe live you can contact any gas supplier to install the meter just give them the reference scotia gives you. If the pipe is dead it is a case of you getting a new supply installed by scotia then going to a gas supplier of choice to have a meter installed. .....

  • thanks lemontart

would there be anyway to see who would be the best gas supplier to go with, as when I do go on comparison sites etc, they ask what my usage is and obviously I haven't used any gas yet

not sure how to work out what you are going to use - I work for national grid and we do not deal in that side of thing - personally would put he what I used at previous premises as a rough estimate
