Connecting laptop to tv.

I've got a little 10.4 inch tv that I bought to use in my campervan or in the kitchen at home but the power adaptor is temperamental so have rarely used it. Now that I can get reasonable broadband speeds I thought I might connect it to my laptop and use it to watch iplayer or other tv through the broadband connection (that is, when the power connector works!!)

I've googled but can't see a connection description that matches what I've got. There's a vga 15 hole socket on the laptop but not on the tv and I get the impression I need to have the same connector on each piece of kit. I can't really work out how to do it. Can someone advise me please.

And for when the power dies again, I've tried before to get another plug but they all seem so specialised - well according to the shops anyway. Any advice with that too? Surely they're fairly standardised.

Thanks

Liz

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1300

TV has got usb, a card reader, power, aerial and headphone sockets, and 2 little green ones marked av in and av out. It's an Evesham DA104.

    Thanks for your help.

The first question I would ask is why would you want to connect a Dell 1300 which has a 15.4" LCD screen to output to a smaller 10.4" for viewing? Doesn't make sense to me. Why not just view directly from the laptop, unless I've missed something important in your post. :)

What are the details on the adapter? 12V DC 2A output? You can probably pick up one in Maplins. Its a case of finding one with the right size tip.

Also try Digidave.co.uk I bought a replacement adapter for my wireless router from them recently.

Because you have to sit still in the same place to watch the laptop, I can't move around the kitchen and watch as I then need to keep adjusting screen . With a tv you can change postiion, walk around the room and still have a good picture - with a laptop you have to stay in the same place. I don't like stitting still - it's too cold in winter and would rather be doing something else at the same time anyway.

Thanks for the advice re adaptor, have tried Maplins unsuccessfully, will try the other suggestion, thanks.
  • As far as I know you can only connect a computer to a television using the following ports on your TV

    S-Video
    HDMI
    DVI or HDMI-to-DVI
    VGA
Any of the above - to-SCART

By the sounds of it you don't have any of these connectors so looks like it's not possible

Look for a scart socket or a Red White & Yellow connectors if you have these on your set then you can do it, if not you can't.
  • I think you're going to need a PC to TV converter like this. They are not cheap but will work with any VGA port to SVideo or composite output.

The cheaper option is this rotating TV stand for the laptop ;)
  • Personally I would say throw it in the bin and forget all about it, with a dodgy power supply I suspect it will be a lot more hassle than it is worth :(

Besides you can pick up a 17 or 19 inch LCD monitor for next to nothing nowadays a simply VGA to VGA and the job is done................
