Think I'm going to get shafted :(

Options
After finally opening the correspondence addressed to The Occupier (I thought it was junk) I found a baliff threat concerning a £378 electricity bill. I only recently moved in and it's not entirely my bill. The addressee suggests EDF don't know whose bill it is either. Anyway, just read the meter and found it's currently a whole 3000 units less than the estimate they've sent with the quarterly bill. This suggests to me that I'm going to end up paying for electricity that has effectively already been paid for. Having always lived in rented accomodation where the bills have been included, I've never dealt with utility bills before now. What to do good people? Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you. (Also 19.23p/unit seems extortionate as a friend tells me he pays 10p. Any tips on that?)

how long have you lived there? did you or the landlord take meter readings when you moved in and have you given the provider your details and these readings?
You will not be liable for electricity used before you moved in however you will need to know what is yours and what is not
  • That rate looks like a day rate for economy 7. Is it an all electric property? Is there a two rate meter there?

Where there readings when you moved in? If not then the best you can do is send in some proof to show when you became responsible and get an up to date reading. They can then at least estimate the portion of the bill which is yours.

I think its a phising letter to get you to cough up your name. You can't take out a prosecution with 'The occupier' on the summons (ok, some joke ones have got though in the past like Mr T.H.E Dog, Mrs M.Y Cat etc).
When you say bailiff, you probably mean debt collector (the sequence would be unpaid bill -> final demand -> letter from legal dept -> debt collector -> court summons -> court case & judgment -> bailiff.
As regards unit prices, your on a deemed contract and can't switch till the debt is sorted.

The 20p odd rate is the tier 1 rate, which is for just a few units each month. Most will be charged rhe tier 2 rate, which will be about 10p.

If the meter is reading 3000 units less than your estimated bill, thenn that means when you submit the correct readings, the amended bill will be lower by about £300.

So it aint so bad really.

Why didn't you contact the supplier when you moved in?

Anyway, better late than never, contact them now and give them a current meter reading :)

Then you'll get billed in your name for what you've actually used (or estimated to have used)

If it is an economy 7 rate, then are you reading the meter right? With an economy 7 meter, there are two readings you need from it. Maybe you're only seeing one reading.
