Adding another child to tax credit claim

Anyone know what is the best way to add a new child to an existing child tax credit claim?
I've sent off the child benefit forms and am assuming that I need to wait until that comes back before adding my son to the tax credit claim. However if I need to do it on a paper form should I ring now so can fill it in afterwards.
Will it be backdated till his birth?
