Automated home

Hi

I am having an extension built for my father who has recently had a stroke and is paralised down the left hand side.

I have discussed with him about getting an ipad to do his emails etc.

What I am looking into is some sort of automated system that we could put in so he can control the lights, tv, sky box, windows, heating and possibly his bed from a touchscreen.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

X-10 is a relatively cheap standardised system that can do quite a lot of stuff. Have a look here:

It's a little slow to react though (fraction of a second, but it's noticeable on stuff like light switches that you expect to be instant). There are faster proprietary systems, but I don't know of any that are open to multiple manufacturer's devices.

You could also look at the HomeEasy range sold by B&Q. Cheaper than X-10, not as sophisticated, but might be up to the job if you wanted something that has it's own remote and does not have to be computer driven.

  • Are you sure an ipad would be the best solution for him. only having the use of one arm may make it difficult to hold and use without it moving.
