Unknown Debit card limit?

I have just tried to save 28K with M&S money on the phone via VISA debit card on cleared funds and Barclays rejected the payment.
I spoke to Barclays and they said that only 5k per day could be paid by VISA by phone or 10K per day via online banking whatever balance is in the account over this.
When I told M&S this, they said they have never come across this limit before?
Any comments, please?
TIA
Vigman
PS Have sent a cheque to M&S!

I have encountered this with HSBC. They call it something like "card-user not present limit". However, they refused to give me the exact limit, since it is used for anti-fraud purposes. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0

Apart from being annoying, it is also embarrassing when dealing with a new bank.
The only way Barclays said I could clear my 28K payment in one go was to go into a bank with IDs...passport...blood sample etc etc and then I would not have the nice people at M&S on the other end of the phone to accept the payment.
I have card security and online bank security and I would have expected they could approve the CLEARED amount after discussion with the account holder:mad:
The guy on the Barclays helpline (having declined to move my own money) went on to ask me about my AA membership (because they have RAC free with some accounts), my life insurance (held for 30 years and why I had chosen M&S!!!!!:mad:

I wanted to make a £40k payment from my HSBC card last year (Maestro) so phoned them to make sure it would go through. Took ages to explain to the idiots exactly what I wanted to do, but eventually I was put through to HSBC Premier and they sorted it out. I had something like a 20 minute window in which to make the payment.
I've made a £95k card payment into NS&I from my Nationwide card and a £50k payment with my Natwest card (both Visa) without authorization and they both went through fine.0 -
I bought a car for £15K once (HSBC). I phoned beforehand, but it went through perfectly OK.0

Interesting then that Barclays wouldn't release the funds even after full discussion and agreement that the funds were available!?

Doing several transactions is a way round it. I've hit a 10k limit with HSBC before. I just did several transactions - didn't seem to be any limit on the number. Did get a phone call from them next day to check though, which is fair enough0

Barclays made it clear that the limits were per day so I couldn't have carried out the transaction in one go. Do any other banks do this?

£60k on a Halifax Debit card to NS&I. And several around the £20k mark, on the same card, without problem.
Only had voice referral security checks when transactions were to a car dealer ..... but they tend to be the awkward ones such as 'name 3 of your DDs that are not utilities ... and the last values'. Easy enough normally .... but not when it's on the receptionist's phone and her cleavage is getting in the way of your brain. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
OK....so anyone else had this from Barclays?.......I'm beginning to feel paranoid!!

Even after my clarifying the situation with a Barclays rep, I had a follow up call from the fraud department wanting me to confirm the 23K payment that had been refused was initiated by me!Any information given in my posts or replies is intended to be of interest and/or help to members of the forum. Yet for me they put through a £9K cardholder not present payment for an Indian restaurant by mistake and without any questions. Crazy!Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
