from Jobseekers to self employed

I am considering going self-employed, and I'm currently on JSA (over 12 months).

I've been told that I may be able to get help to do it, with return to work credits, working tax credits and various one off payments for signing off, and for startup costs. Can someone her clarify to me what I can and can't get?

Also, would I still be able to get help with my housing and council tax, as I'm not expecting the business to make me a wage for 6 - 12 months...

Thanks in advance for any help/advice :)

  • Bit sketchy but, I know there's help for unemployed of £50 per week for the first few months (I think it's 16 weeks) as long as the business is expected to yield at least 16hrs per week work.

Next time you sign on ask them to make an advisor appointment for you so you can ask.

    Good Luck
  • Thanks Tameside. I'll be speking to them when I go there next, but beforehand I've decided to visit the CAB.
