Hi, it depends what type of tourist you are? Young looking for clubbing -choose Wencelsaw Square (Vaclavske Namesti), Mature looking for galleries - Old Town Square, lovely is Lesser Town Square which is not even 5 min walk to Charles Bridge (must see in Prague) and its below Prague Castle.
These are Central locations of Prague district 1.
If you want something nice, bit cheaper and not in centre but close enough(20min walk) I would recommend Vinohrady, Prague district 2.Best wins ever:

I stayed just out of the centre as I suppose about a 20min walk, but wherever you stay the underground system will get you into the centre in no time and it is really easy to use and cheap. I stayed at a hotel called TYL which was right by an underground station and really nice. It was really cheap when I went but I think the price may have gone up a bit, worth a look though. You will have a great time really great place and on my list of places to return.0

When I went to Prague in the summer I booked in to the Hotel Florentina which is a boat hotel moored about 5/10mins walk to Charles Bridge. 40 Euro for the night including breakfast. Not the greatest accomodation (think cruise ship) but really central and lovely view across to the Castle.0

Fantastic appartments at 'The Castle Stepps' includes breakfast. As it says, beside the castle. Very cheap.Love your Mum, you'll never get another one when she's gone.0

I'm off to Prague at the end of this month and we've booked to stay in a B&B in the Smichov area. Does anyone know how long it will take to travel into the centre (eg. to visit Charles Bridge) and what the cheapest method of transport is? Thanks

Dont know the area you are staying but the metro and the trams are regular and plentiful, Use the same ticket on both for about £3 to £4 for a day ticket0 -
I have got to endorse the opinions here. The whole public transport system is very good indeed and the prices of hotels outside the city limits are so much cheaper it makes financial sense to use these rather than the expensive city centre hotels - although even here real bargains are to be had.
A word of warning - Prague taxis are notorious for overcharging. On the very rare occasions that I have used one, I have booked it at an Irish bar called Rocky O'Riley's which is just off Wencelas Square. They guarantee no rip-offs."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Hi
Let me know which street is your hotel and I can advise you better, Smichov is spread a bit, but if you are close to river, you will be approx 15-20 min walk to Charles Bridge:)
Hope you have lovely time, if you need any more info, ask.Best wins ever:

Hi
I would definitely use the tram there.Your hotel is about 700m walk from Novy Smichov and the transport stop there is called Andel.
So if you walk over there, you can hop on tram no 12 or 20 to take to Charles Bridge.
There is also subway - Metro line B stop at Andel.
Andel is quite big hub, there is big shopping centre Novy Smichov with supermarket, cinemas etc. Plenty of places to eat. Metro and tram stops there..and it is in easy reach of Old Town.;)Best wins ever:
