So sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you and your mum can find some consolation in this poem and that it was the right decision to make.
IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve -- it must be you
who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
don’t let your heart hold back its tears.0 -

As the well known saying goes - it's better a week too early than a day too late. Your mum was doing the selfless thing and letting the dog go rather than keeping him clinging on her for benefit.
((((hugs)))) to you all.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
So very sorry about your boy. I know just what you mean, it all becomes so real when the vet arrives. And at that last moment you want to shout out for it all to stop. But the time was right for him - as heartbreaking as it is.
Try to think of the happy times - it will get a bit easier as days pass.
God bless to you and your family and the other boy who will no doubt miss Oscar xxx0 -
Thank you all for the kind words...it means a lot, it really does. I'm still waiting for it to totally sink in...that after nearly 16 years of having him around, I'll never see him again. I was even remembering stupid things, like the time when I was about 10/11 and out in a rowboat with my sister and a friend in a small lake. We'd stupidly dropped one of the oars and Oscar, without any instruction from my mother, who was standing on the shore, dived in, grabbed the rope that was tied to the boat and started dragging us back to shore. No idea how he figured that one out, and I was especially impressed as he's not really a family dog - more a one person dog (in this case my mother).
Now we'll just have to see how long his son, Chance, lives...my mother is starting to get worried about a neighbour who has in the past resented our dogs going on what he claims is "his" land (it's not, and my mother sent him the deeds to prove it). He's done some pretty insane things recently (smearing dog mess on my mother's gate being one) and my mother's beginning to get paranoid that he may try and poison our dog...having seen what he's been capable of (as well as the dog mess issue, he's got into a lot of verbal altercations, including one on the day we had our last dog, Spot, put to sleep a few months ago) I wouldn't put it past him...so there's added worry there.
I can't believe I have to go back to Scotland tomorrow. Sadly I can't stay any longer as I am already very far behind with work (doing a masters degree), but I really don't want to go

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. If it is any comfort, I think I left it too long before I made the decision to set my little dog free of his pain, and that worries me. We can only do what is right at the time, and he sounds like a lovely and much loved dog and it is a tribute to him that you and your mum are so upset by his loss.0

Know exactly how you're feeling, I had to put my girl PTS end of August & I still miss her desperately, the 1st few days were horrible & we'd been a week waiting for the day to arrive - it does get better but its hard x0

(((hugs)))Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I know how your mum feels but its very very unlikely the neighbour from hell would do anything like that. Most bullies are cowards and smearing a bit of poo is a silly childish cowardly thing to do. Just make sure that your mum is always with the dog when he is outside.
God bless to you all xxx Its a terribly sad time for you.0 -
Just to say how sorry I am, I dont think unless you have a dog youself how upsetting and heart breaking it must be when they die or have to be PTS as they are such a huge part of the family. I think maybe the right decision was made despite how painfull it must have been for you all as you dont want him to suffer. I know i would feel the same as you if i was in your position, although I cannot offer you any real advice i just wanted to post and say how sorry I am for you and your family!Puppy Chick wants to be mortgage free by 50!
