Do I have to attend a tesco induction

I have been given a sunday job at a new tesco which is due to open soon. At the interview I said that I couldn't work on Friday's as I was at uni and this was OK (hence getting the sunday job). I have attended the 1st induction and then I was told that I must attend two more inductions, one being on a Friday 10-7pm. When I told the manager that I couldn't do the Friday induction she just said that this is one time I will have to cancel uni.I have tried to re jig my uni lectures but there is one lecture I can't and must attend. I therefore can only do the induction from 12-7pm instead of 10-7pm. Do you think Tesco will accept this or will I have to give back word on my job.

Any advise would be grateful.

To be honest, if you have explained to employer that you can only work weekends (specifically Sundays) it would be irresponsible of them to expect you to miss Uni so that you can attend an induction on a day outside of your working hours. I think that the person who is dealing with the inductions is perhaps being unreasonable here. Working 12-7pm seems like a very good compromise to me.
  • I disagree. No university insists on 100% attendance and missing one lecture won't be the end of the world.

It will feel like it if/when fees hit £9,000 per year

It depends on the course. You need really good reasons to skip some of the practicals on science courses.

surely, pony girl, you can talk to your tutor and also arrange to share lecture notes? (if this is a standard lecture; if it's a science practical, maybe you could change to another group for the week?)
  • Thanks for your replies. The lecture I am unable to miss is one that you pass for just attending. As I am doing a teaching degree its one of those modules that just require you to attend for you to pass. As I missed one earlier in the term for a funeral its impossible to miss another or I will fail that unit therefore failing year 2.
So I have to put uni first.
  • Can you speak to the employer and suggest attending from 12 onwards?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

You did make it clear to the employer that Fridays were out of the question.

I would turn around to the manager and say "This is the one time I will have to cancel your request and go to Uni!"

In which case to be fair to Tesco they will probably say, the induction is mandatory so we'll find someone else that can attend on a Friday and wants a job.

In which case to be fair to the OP who specifically mentioned this prior to them saying "That's not a problem, When can you start?", I would happily go elsewhere, to a company that can grasp what "I cannot do Fridays" actually means, particularly if they insisted I skip my rather expensive University Course for some Supermarket induction. ;)
