Maxtor External Hard Drive - Can't locate on PC

Getting a little stressed because it was recently suggested by a friend that I should disconnect my external hard drive because it could be the reason why my PC was slow to start up. Needed to reconnect this evening and while the power light is showing green, I can't locate hard drive on my PC:eek:. In a little panic because I've got all my family photo's stored on it. My Mum's died very recently and I don't want to lose my photo's of her. Can any kind soul give me some nice straightforward advice. Thanks in advance.

    Got another pc to try?

If you get them back, always keep 2 copies (at least) on separate hard disks, another one (or more) on dvd's, and print out the really important ones.

  • Also if it is USB try another port. Which version of Windows have you got Fran and also don't panic, there will be a solution.

It's Windows XP. I'm not very technically minded and had no idea it would cause a problem. Thought it was simply a case of plugging in and off you go again. Sure my friend had no idea either.Did try another USB port but made no difference. Maybe I should leave it for tonight because I'm really tired and maybe a fresh start tomorrow might be for the best.

Thanks for your advice and I'll certainly do that for the future. Have only got 1 pc unfortunately.

  • Plug it into a USB port on the back .. .. .. not the front of the PC
