dla claim for my son with possible adhd ..

Hi there all iam wondering if any one could help me or give some info advice on claiming dla for my son with severe behavioural problems!
my son is 4 years old and will be 5 in january 2011 ,ive been having problems with him ever since i can remember and is getting worse as he gets older .My on is very active …on the go all the time with no in-between .He has very poor concentration span and easily distracted .He suffers with exsma also which i believe is a result to his constant super charged behaviour and also has a speech impediment which results in him being more frustrated and violent .My son demands things and will screech out screaming and episode can last an hour or so if he doesn't get what he wants .my son is violent/aggressive spontaneously and finds it hard to socialise with other children in parks etc as he is very hard handed and forceful [although to his defence i really don't think he understands this ]…My son constantly fights with his two sisters on a daily bases and has bruised /scratched them many a times (daughters aged 3 and 6 ) .My son is constantly and i mean constantly with no exaggeration always trying to do something that he shouldn't and breaks things constantly including all his toys …his sisters and house hold furniture!!. getting out with him is difficult as he try to run away and even bus rides are a major issue as he runs on top deck and constantly switching chairs running around screaming if i try and restrain him .things are becoming progressively worse and the danger element to his stunts are becoming very much worrying .He is constantly jumping off of things and has NO fear at all .Just a few weeks ago i lost him at the park and he had ran home by himself[across busy road]! just a few days a go while i was in the bathroom my daughter ran down stairs to tell me ny son had managed to open the attic bedroom window and that he was hanging out of there trying to pick the grass moulds form the sledges!!!!!!...very frightening although my son was very amused .
Ive cut out all food and drinks sweets etc that might be making him worse but there seams to be no change ! ...also sleeping is a major issue as he takes about two hours to go to sleep and wakes several times through the night and the most early mornings sneaks downstairs to rade the cupboards or chuck water around the bath room or empty things down the toilet etc !! this is becoming a nightmare and am seriously worried for his safety .He has began to harm himself ..scratching/biting himself when he's frustrated /agitated or cant get his own way .sometimes he screeches high pitched spontaneously if he's annoyed or agitated if he can not put his trousers/slippers on etc ! also one thing he has started to do which iam not sure if it is anything to be worried about is he seams to be repeating himself shouting out loud verses he has learnt in his arabic class..he will wake up in the morning repeating these verses aloud and continues on and off through the day reading aloud continuously sometimes for up to half hour !! please if any one can help me at all with any advise or possibilities of this so that i can look into !
i went to the doctor with him and expressed my concerns back in 2009 but unfortunately i was told after him referring him to a specialist that we lived out of the catchment area and was offered no further help!!..i have been back to my doctor this year after moving and have expressed my concerns and demanded he be seen ....he has now been referd again and have a date for 6 weeks time !...can i mention that my son is not in school and is awaiting a place meant .i do feel that his behaviour may calm down but don't believe this to be his issue as of the danger side to it .My son did spend a few months in nursery doing 2 hours a day but they did not express the same concerns hence the reason i di not press on for further help with gp back in 2009 . i believe that while my son was in nursery as he was full of activities painting …playing with sand etc he was fully occupied hence their reason for better behaviour although he was put on the naughty bench at least 4 times a week during outside play for what ever reasons fighting etc !
Please if any one can gv advise !!Ive sent off a claim for dla as I believe that with this help it will make things easier …i.e. traveling will be safer and I will be able to fund more activities and replace things he has broken etc or even get some help with supervision with him when need to do things !
Can I mention that my other two children are very well mannered and well behaviour and I have No issues with at all .My son if anything takes all my attention ?
Also I would like to mention that every one who meets my son if only for half hour comments on how hard work he is …nobody else handles taking him anywhere and visiting is out of the question as he causes cause!!...
i have included in my dla ap the referral letters my doc has written to specialist confirming that he my son is indeed ;ike a super charged bouncing ball having to be physically restrained and was born out in the cause he played out in the surgery !!…after sending this off to dla ive been told that they have asked gp for a factual report ?//
any help would be great thanks

To get DLA you need to show that your son's needs are greater than those of a 'typical' child of his age. (Not compare him with his siblings.)

It;s difficult to read the original post, but I have noted a few things....

It could be argued that his behaviour is, in the main, fairly typical of a lively 4 year old. All 4 year olds break things, all four year olds have a tendency to run off if you let them loose outside, four year olds tend to have no sense of danger.

Your boy does seem able to moderate his behaviour at times. He was on the 'naughty bench' at nursery 4 times in one week - that's pretty good! And the reasons given were things like 'fighting' - again pretty normal behaviour for a 4 year old!

You say he shouts out verses learned in his Arabic classes. So, he is well enough behaved to attend some form of pre-school language lessons?

I'm not trying to say there is nothing wrong with your son, just that the DLA decision maker may not see things in the same way you do.

Your post is rather confusing, and I can't see if you have sent off the DLA application. If you haven't already sent them off the I suggest you get help. DLA forms are a little confusing for the best of us, and with respect, you don't express yourself clearly.

Keep a diary for a week or so - write down everything that concerns you about your son. Get input from the nursery and Arabic language teacher too. Then take your diary and notes to the CAB or to DIAL or some other group. They will be able to give you free advice and fill in the forms for you.

If you have sent off the form, than still keep the diary - your application for DLA may be refused, if it is you can see one of the organizations I mentioned and see if they think an appeal is likely to succeed. Again, they will help with the appeal.

Finally, whether or not your son has any 'extra' needs. You can help him at home. Be firm and consistent with him. Keep him usefully occupied - you mentioned DLA would pay for extra activities - check your local library they often offer free activity sessions, and maybe your local sports centre offer activities too?

    Best of luck!
  • Hi, this is the first time I have felt able to reply to a thread here. Firstly, I must comment on previous comments with regard to the writing style of your post,,,to me those comments are irrelevant, to me you sound desperate and that is showing through in the text and punctuation in your thread. Comments with complaint about it are in general completely unnessassary and unhelpful. Yes its a garbled maze, but I understand why.

(Paragraph)(with respect to the general agreement of punctuation!)
I applied for dla as instructed by my sons consultant, my son has anxiety disorder with many of the asperges traits, he is 13 years old but has the sense and mental age of a 9year old,he does require far more time and attention than a child of his age, I know this personnally as he is a twin! My first request for dla was immediatly rejected, I was advised this would be the case and to automatically appeal, which I did, let me warn you this is a very long appeal process but well worth the time and effort. If the result of the appeal is overturned by original department for dla then your claim will be backdated to the date you returned the original claim. In some cases the dla department are unable to overturn their own decision therefore the case is sent to a tribunal, this was the case for me and seems to be the most common result in these cases.

At tribunal you will sit facing 3 different professionals who have records and reports to consider, and this is the point you get to state your case, I admit at this stage it is very unsettling, but you are not on trial, you are there to put forward your reasons, provide as much information as you can, come prepared, bring letters from friends, teachers, neighbours any one that can support your case, if the decision maker decides to allow your case chances are you would be awarded the lower rate of dla, which again will be completely backdated to original claim date.

As i say, this is a long drawn out process, but stick with it, I did, not for my own financial gain, but to enable me to afford to take my son frequently to engage in a variety of socail situations, thus enabling him to gain experience, knowledge and confidence in himself. Also, because when he leaves school i wanted it to be easier for him to recieve the extra guidence and support channels available to him, also he would take over the recieving dla payments.

Good Luck, its hard and tiring, especially when life is that bit harder for you already, but you are on the right road, dont let them make you feel you are not entitled, you just gotta prove the worth of your case, as a mother you are best placed to state this case.....good luck...you are doing yourself proud.
    Kind regards Beth

If you really believe that your son has a medical condition then your time would be better spent working with your GP for a full consultation rather than chasing a DLA claim. After all, if a cause can be identified then there may be recommended management / treatments plans.

I cannot see a DLA claim being successful without the recognition of a condition from a medical professional.

You would be wrong: DLA is awarded on the basis of someone's needs, NOT their diagnosis. It is ENTIRELY possible to get DLA without a formal diagnosis, it may be many years before one is made, and even then it may change over the years as a child matures.

And even with a diagnosis, that may not be very helpful in applying for DLA: one child with Downs Syndrome may have very different needs from another, so their NEEDS have to be assessed, and the diagnosis is irrelevant.

BTW, I realise the OP's child does NOT have Downs Syndrome, but it seemed better to use that example than one which might apply.

Does your 4 year old need more than the average 4 year old? He can't get lower mobility (this is for supervision in unfamiliar places) until he's 5.

  • Hi

This little lad is no different than my grandson of the same age.

An absolute terror at times - can't be taken out - is disruptive - aggressive and rude. Still in nappies - refuses to be potty trained which results in him wetting himself instead on purpose. His favourite statement at the moment is that 'I'm a naughty boy!!!' Does he have a problem - oh yes, only when he can't get what he wants or we use the awful word NO!! That alone creates mayhem.!!

Give in to him and he is a perfect little Angel.

Good parenting, patience, understanding and boundaries which are reinforced are starting to sort him out.

To label him as having 'problems' for the sake of money (DLA) is wrong in my eyes. He will eventually believe that he is a 'bad' boy if enough people say he is and is labeled as such!
