Legal protection insurance - motor and home - Rip off?

This month I take out two motor policies (me and wife) and our home insurance. This comes to around £800. It makes sense to do this, and we shop around.
On each of these policies we take out additional 'motor legal' or household legal cover which costs around £75
So two questions.
Is there a cheaper way of insuring against future legal costs?
and I suppose more subjective. Is it worth taking out the policies at all. Having used (and paid) for a solicitor recently my hunch is that it could be worthwhile. Though I only paid because my legal cover didn't cover my needs.
