Am i entitled to anything??

Hi there

After a bit of advice please, I have 3 children am living with my partner and am currently on Maternity leave due to end in Feb but have just found out the company I work for are about to go into liquidation so I now have no job, I was only working part time (2 days a week anyway).

After I had my baby I became very ill and it turns out after numerous blood tests/scans etc I have Graves Disease. In a way I am glad I do not have to return to my job as the way I feel at the moment is pretty awful and do not think I could actually do a days work!

I was wondering if anyone knew whether I would be entitled to any benefits? We currently receive Working tax credits and child tax credits as my children were in nursery on the days I worked.

I need advice from both sides, what am i entitled to if anything now I no longer have a job and what am i entitled to if anything now I have Graves Disease?

Thanks for your help

Is your partner working and, if so, on what kind of salary?

    Hi Katie,

As Oldernotwiser asks, it is important to know what your partner's income is.

Also, I believe Graves Disease can be quite mild or quite severe or anything in between. A lot depends on how far it disables you. If you have trouble with mobility you may qualify for the mobility component of disability living allowance and if you need care you may qualify for the care component of this benefit. If the care component is at the middle or high rate and no-one is receiving carers allowance for you, your premiums for benefit purposes increase again. There is a double whammy with these benefits - first, they give you more income, but secondly they increase the amount your household can earn before crossing the benefits threshold.

Have you told the Inland Revenue about your illness? It may be that you will qualify for the disability element of working tax credit, which in turn would give you a disability premium for benefits purposes.

Please do tell us as much as you can about your situation so we can give you a better answer.

    Oh, and congratulations!
  • Not sure about benefits etc but if you had been in your job for over 2 years I believe you should be entitled to redundancy money, if the company can't pay (likely if they've gone into liquidation) then there is some sort of government fund for employees of companies who have folded.
  • Hi there

Thanks so much for the replies.
My Partner is a Director, and his earnings from employment are £5853.00, and dividends are £19.600.00.

With regards to the Graves Disease, Its not affecting my mobility, but I am suffering with severe Panic Attacks, heart palpatations, tremours, fatigue and just overall feeling like crap that I dont think I could actually sit behind a desk in front of a comptuter even part time feeling the way i feel. When I was working my wages just about covered the Nursery Fees, so I wasnt any better off from working but felt my kids were as they really enjoyed going to Nursery and I really do not want to take them out.
I was only with the company a year so will not receive anything from them! I am still waiting to hear from them what my next step is with regards to my maternity pay, they said I will receive it this month from them (probably half a months worth) but then it will be passed on to the liquidator, is that right? Or do i need to be doing anything my end to make sure im still getting the remainder of what im entitled to?

    Thanks again

Your help with childcare costs will stop also as you are no longer going back into employment
  • I received my diagnosis of Graves Disease last Friday, went on beta blockers and Carbimazole on Tuesday. I have the heart palpitations, sweating, wheezing, weakness in both legs and shaking to the extent I can't write. I'm feeling a hundred times better even though I've been on the meds for a couple of days. Still working. See Endocrinologist in a few weeks. You need to get to your Docs to get medication, trust me you will feel the difference. Sorry no idea about benefits. Self employed, no work = no pay.
  • Hi ya

I have been on meds for 6 weeks now. I take 40mg Carbimazole and 160mg Propranolol (Beta Blockers) a day, I do feel ALOT better on the drugs but still not 100%. Some days I feel great, some days absolutely awful.

    Are you on similar amounts?

I'm on 60mg Carbimazole and 60mg Propanolol. I feel so much better, still got the shakes, sweats and leg weakness but my heart palpitations have all but stopped - I love Propanolol! I recognised the condition as my twin sister was diagnosed a few years ago so haven't been ill for too long. It's a horrible, yucky condition. Best wishes FF
  • Hi

Thanks for all the replies, now I have posted the figures of my partners income can anyone help me any further?

    Hi FF
Thanks for sharing FF, I had a scan today where i had radioactive stuff injected into me, now have to wait 2 weeks for the results and see what the next step is. I've noticed im losing alot of hair tho, its really upsetting me, i know i've just had a baby and its normal but i'm losing ALOT more than i have after my other pregnancies and its really noticable.
