Guttering, Fascias and Soffits quotes in Wakefield, West Yorkshire

Hi everyone

We have been putting it off for years but finally need to get our guttering done as it's causing problems with the pointing due to the huge leaks. The fascia boards are also rotten in places so we are going to get the whole job done for peace of mind.

I'm wary of roofers. We've had problems in the past, so have my parents, and although we had one quote from a roofer in the village who is reputable, he renaged on it as he's stopped doing guttering, etc now.

So we've gone for the bigger plastic firms. So far, we've had quotes from Anglian, EYG and Just Fascias (in Barnsley). The quotes have been £2025, £1445 and £2080 in the same order as I've listed the firms above.

The obvious choice seems to be EYG, but the difference is huge and it's ringing alarm bells.

Has anyone had dealings with EYG either way? The EYG guy came cold calling but they were no pressure and spurred us on to get more quotes.

Our neighbours went with Just Fascias but paid £4k for their bungalow, which seems steep. Although they were really happy with the service. And they're older and have plenty of money, so it's not an issue like it is for us :o We threw Anglian in just after googling and I found a forum where someone had said their products are good quality. But I've heard nothing good or bad apart from that about them.

It's going to take up most of our savings, and so all advice welcomed on this. Also, if anyone has any personal recommendations that would be great.

Many thanks, as always
Lucy

  • £45-55 per linear mtr. Measure the front back sides etc; and ask you quoters who makes the product they use. This makes a difference as there are many qualities of PVCu, also ask if they are stripping off ALL the old wooded soffits and boards etc, as the soffit pvcu used needs to be thicker for rip off. Bungalow roofs tend to be 110 - 120 square meters so large capacity gutters needed. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, knowloads. Would you say it is recommended to remove all the old wood, rather than just cover it up?

Thanks so much for your reply. Would you know if there's any particular type/brand we should be looking out for with PVCu? I have no idea. I will of course google it but I'm not sure how much info will be on the net so all advice is very welcomed. :T

What a minefield. We have also spoken to a chap about aluminium guttering, and are awaiting a quote from him too. Not sure how long we'll be staying here - but the damp from the leaking gutters has made me nervous so even though we're brassic, as long as we get a proper job done I'll be happy. :o

    Thanks again!

Of course you should remove it-if you just stick it over the top, it is only as strong as the rotten old wood underneath.
That's essentially what the cowboys do, because it's far cheaper. It will look lovely for a year or two though, by which time they're long gone.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
