Car Insurance Premium - Can it be recovered after an accident

I'm looking for some advice if anyone can help please. My wife recently had an accident in her car and it has been written off. There were around 10 months outstanding on her insurance policy. I assumed she would be able to get a refund on the outstanding cover but the insurance company says not. Is that correct? It begs the question of what would happen if the insurance was paid in monthly installments - could these have been stopped after the accident therefore effectively being refunded the money? Any advice is gratefully received. Thank you.

This is correct. She paid her insurance premium so that if she had an accident in the policy period they would cover repairs/value of the vehicle. As she has made a claim the entire premium is due.
Will her insurers allow her to add another vehicle to the cover however? Most will allow this for no extra cost/admin fee only, unless it is a higher risk vehicle.
If she paid by DD then the outstanding premium would have been deducted from the settlement figure.
PS. I'm assuming that your wife was deemed either to be at fault or partially at fault. If it was a completely non fault accident most insurers would allow a refund pro-rata.0 -
Caerdragon - thank you for your reply. Now you explain it does make sense. I think our best option will be to insure the replacement car with same insurer (unless the premium is wildly over the odds). As you suggset, the insurers deem her to be at fault. There is some debate about this but that's another story!! Thanks again for your help.0

and remember if it's deemed not her fault then she can add the lost premium to her claim against the third prty0
