Will my home insurance be invalid?

I have my mortgage and home insurance with the same building society. I rent out my property and informed my insurance company of this and have the correct landlord's insurance. However, I do not have premission to let from the mortgage lender (long story; I signed it all off in branch over a year ago, nut the paperwork was never processed and I was later told they knew nothing about it - they then wanted me to take out a BTL mortgage at a higher rate, so I just didn't bother).

I now need to make a claim for subsidence damage on the property, and am really worried that even though I have the correct insurance, they will somehow say my policy is invalid because I don't have permission to let. Is this any of their business or am I worrying unnecessarily? Can anyone please advise?

You may have broken the terms of your mortgage by letting, but not the terms of your landlord's insurance policy.

It's likely the mortgagee may find out because of this, and there may be repercusions with them, but can't see your claim being in jeopardy.
  • Many thanks for that - it puts my mind at rest. Even though they are the same company the mortgage and insurance arms seem to be completely seperate and the insurance company have never asked me any questions about my mortgage so I'm hoping all will be ok.:)

    Hi Quentin:

Am not sure how the mortgage company could influence the insurance company in this case?

    Me neither????? (As I posted)

    What is your point?
